What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI is the umbrella name for AI systems that plan and carry out several steps on their own to finish a job, instead of waiting for each instruction.

Since 2025, "agentic" has been the most repeated word in tech: AI that does not just answer but runs a whole process, sometimes several agents splitting the work. It sounds grand, yet the business owner's questions stay the same: what may it do alone, who approves, who answers for mistakes.

A vendor pitches an "agentic AI customer care solution": ask exactly which tasks it does alone and which wait for a person.

How does Agentic AI work?

  1. 1It receives a goal rather than a question: "handle tonight's product enquiries".
  2. 2It plans on its own, splitting the goal into small steps.
  3. 3It calls the tools it is allowed to use: stock, delivery slots, draft orders; sometimes several agents share the work.
  4. 4It checks the result, then reports back or waits for a person to approve at important points.

What a shop or café can use it for

  • Handling product enquiries after hours: checking stock, giving delivery dates, drafting orders.
  • Each morning, summarising unshipped orders and unanswered customers for the owner.
  • Watching stock levels and drafting a purchase order when items run low.

What to watch out for

  • The more steps it takes alone, the further a mistake spreads: limit permissions and keep approval where money is involved.
  • Ask the vendor which actions it takes on its own, and where it logs what it did.
  • Trial it on one small job before handing over a whole process.
